My name is Andrew Spearman Blake; I go by all three. I am an expressionist. I take things in which I see / feel in our shared world, internalize them, and then express them via an array of forms. I am a songwriter, writer of prose, poetry, cinematographer and consultant for a company called Turned Productions. My life goes through many ups, downs and easy plateaus; at any point along the path I’ll be expressing something in one form or another, even if it’s with my middle finger.
I am a California kid, man. At 28 years old now, the coast of California still runs deep in me. I’ve traveled and lived just about everywhere, save the better part of Asia, & my time across seas and land helped shape myself and my perspectives. I am a Communication major currently finishing up my sophomore year of college. When ones passion is life, human beings, expression, being a Comm major just fit in naturally; I have a strong passion for it.
I believe in the truth that one’s outer self must match their inner self in order for most things in their life to be in harmony. Therefore I am not a fan of popular culture, more so I am a fan of counter culture. For better or worse, my life rocks along the lines of a quote from the epic Howard Zinn:
“I start from the supposition that the world is topsy turvy. That things are all wrong. That the wrong people are in jail, and the wrong people are out of jail. That the wrong people are in power, and the wrong people are out of power. I start with the supposition that we don’t have to say too much about this because all we have to do is think about the state of the world today and realize that things are all upside down.”
I don’t believe in branding yourself in today’s society. I don’t believe in trying to portray a false image. I believe in expressing who you are; yet to know one’s self may be one of the hardest things to do in life; then to know how to express that self, another difficult equation in itself. And I am not perfect at it… pero that is what makes the game so much fun, and so rewarding. We are forever growing, being humbled, learning…. Just everything the word growing encompasses when referring to one’s self. This journey we take from point A to point B, it is the destination; we must rock the times, when they are high, when they are low, when they reek of monotony.
In the end I say venceremos, which is a Spanish phrase meaning “we will overcome.” It is a word I use daily in my life. No matter the trials, until the gun touches your head or the spirits call you back, we rock the game… and we will overcome. Together.
Venceremos, amigos! y que todos los dioses te acompañen.
